Shiraz Back Vintage Tasting Notes

Vintage 2018 (not yet released)

Very expressive on the nose, with striking blackberry notes, followed by dark chocolate, vanilla and smoky elements. Broad and rich in flavour; saturated with black ripe fruits, a fine tannin structure and layers of brambly fruits, with the finish being fresh, and very long. A classic example of basket press shiraz, and one of the finest to date !

Vintage Conditions – Dry and hot during December and February. Some rainfall during January.

Vintage 2017

Wonderfully ripe and perfumed, the bouquet shows blackberry, dark plum, olive and vanillin oak characters on the nose with a touch of pepper spice. The palate delivers excellent weight and fruit intensity, beautifully supported by rounded mouthfeel and silky tannins, finishing lingering and flavoursome. 

Vintage Conditions – Wet and extended growing/ripening season. Higher yields resulting in wines with more vibrancy, red fruit characters and finer tannins.

Vintage 2016

Splendidly fruited and immensely appealing, the bouquet shows dark fruit richness together with vanilla, cedar, toasted spice and olive characters. It is wonderfully weighted and richly textured with excellent intensity and persistency, beautifully supported by silky texture and supple tannins.

Vintage Conditions – Dry and hot during December and February. Some rainfall during January.

  Vintage 2015

Addictive aromas of black/blueberry, dark plum, vanilla pod, chocolatey oak and warm spice on the nose. The palate is robust and delectable with multi-layered mouthfeel and silky tannins that are mouth-coating, finishing superbly long and gratifying.

Vintage Conditions – Wet January, very warm and dry February.

Drink At its best: 2023 to 2037

Vintage 2014

This is clear for what it is; the richly fragrant bouquet shows dark berry, cake spice, walnut, floral and cedar characters, leading to a concentrated palate that’s beautifully polished and flowing. A wonderfully structured shiraz, it’s generous and powerful with delightful refinement.

Vintage Conditions – Cold/wet spring, wet February. Late vintage.

 Vintage 2013

Showing core of sweet fruit intensity with vanillin oak, anise and violet notes, the wine displays excellent weight and richness with waves of silky texture and supple tannins. It’s filled with distinct varietal flavours combined with gorgeous complexity, making it lip-smacking and satisfying. 

Vintage Conditions – Warm to hot and dry.

Vintage 2012

Dense and brooding, this is sumptuous and brimming with delicious notes of blackberry, dark plum, mocha, clove and cedar on the nose, leading to a powerfully expressed palate that’s mouthfilling and persistent. There are loads of tannins, yet it’s silky and perfectly balanced. 

Vintage Conditions – Warm. Slow ripening period.

Vintage 2011

Beautifully composed and styled, the wine shows sweet plum, mulberry, tapenade, cedar and fragrant spice aromas on the nose, followed by a wonderfully flavoursome palate that’s generously textured and persistent. Graceful and seductive with excellent complexity

Vintage 2010  

This substantial shiraz is impressively fruited and expressed, showing blackberry, Black Doris plum, smoked game, tar and toasty oak characters on the nose. The palate is equally satisfying with excellent depth and richness with the impact continuing to the sustained finish. Solid and robust with great volume flavours.

Vintage Conditions – Warm conditions, good spring rainfall.

Vintage 2009

The flavours are striking and delicious with layers of dark fruits, olive, vanillin oak, dried herb and pepper spice. It’s succulent and fleshy on the palate, offering splendid weight and generosity, beautifully complemented by refined texture and chalky tannins. Super long and engaging.

Vintage Conditions – Very warm – hot conditions.

Vintage 2008

This is opulent and fabulously expressed on the nose showing blackberry, plum jam, clove, game and cedar characters, followed by a superbly concentrated palate that’s mouthfilling and lingering. It’s delectably flavoursome and classically structured by plenty of polished tannins.

Vintage Conditions – Very hot and dry. Heatwave (40oC for 14 days) during harvest.

Vintage 2007  

The wine shows gorgeous dark fruit notes with seductive nuances of roasted hazelnut, anise, thyme and floral on the nose. It’s wonderfully weighted on the palate, offering excellent density and persistency with a lengthy firm finish. It’s bold and structured, designed to partner rich flavoursome dishes.

Vintage Conditions – Very dry and hot conditions. Extremely low yields and difficult growing conditions.

Vintage 2006

Wonderfully complex and inviting, the bouquet shows sweet fruit richness with warm spice, cedar and dark cocoa notes. It’s powerful yet graceful on the palate, displaying terrific fruit intensity backed by beautifully rounded mouthfeel and silky tannins. Brilliantly styled and delightfully maturing.

Vintage Conditions – Even ripening – cool. Good summer rainfall.

Super complex and seductive, the wine shows sweet berry, leather, dried fruit, smoked wood and dark spice notes on the nose, followed by a beautifully rounded palate that’s succulent and flavoursome. Wonderfully perfumed and inviting, it’s graceful and hedonistic.

It’s brooding with dark fruit richness combined with vanilla, toasted nut, tapenade and leather notes on the nose. The palate delivers excellent weight and intensity, wonderfully supported by plush mouthfeel and fine, grainy tannins, making it luscious and sturdy at the same time. A glorious offering.
